Prisoners allowed to sit Grade XI exam

An educational training in Insein prison

Prisoners can sit Grade XI examination (Matriculation) within the compound of Correctional Department, said a spokesperson.
“Teachers from the departments under the Ministry of Education are giving lectures free of charge to prepare them for the exam. They are coming to us daily, and this arrangement started in 2007.
“Though they are confined, they are not leading a hopeless and helpless life. If they are really willing to sit the exam, they are given such a chance”, said the spokesperson.
In addition, a literacy course was opened on April 1 for the first time in Insein Correctional Facility to enable the prisoners to know how to read, write and do Arithmatics sum (3Rs).
The instructors of this three R’s course are nobody but the prisoners who are educated and willing to teach their fellow inmates. The instructor inmates had to attend a multiplier course opened by teachers from the Ministry of Education.
