The prisoners in Insein Jail can now play, and play a part in the plays or watch them as the Correctional Department opened a gymnasium-cum-theatre on January 1 in Insein Gaol.
The opening ceremony was held in conjunction with offering dawn meal to Buddhist monks numbering 11. The volleyball tourney was held after opening the gymnasium-cum-theatre at 8 am.
“Our objective is to enable the inmates to do physical exercise for their health. We even intend to produce athletes from among our staff and the prisoners”, explained Col Zaw Win (Rtd), the director-general of the Correctional Department.
This is in fact the soft opening, and when the construction in completed, all indoor games will be available and there can be held stage shows, theatrical dance, Wedding Receptions and even the workshops and / or seminars.
The construction is expected to finish by end of March, it is learnt.
