Reclamation of sites for construction of ports along the area from Ahlone Port Zone to Botahtaung Monkey Point in addition to five existing ports under the management of Myanmar Port Authority with be trusted to the hands of private entrepreneurs as an initial step to privatize port services under the B.O.T. system.
The existing ports are : Botahtaung, Bo Aung Kyaw, Pansodan Nanthida, Health and Sule Ports.
In a statement by the Ministry of Transport, it is stated that the purpose of privatization is to unable the effective and efficient management of cargoes both imported and exported.
And what is more, dredging of Yangon River and maintenance of waterway will be carried out in future through entering into contracts with private entrepreneurs, it is learnt. The revenues will come from maintenance charges to be collected from vessels cruising Yangon River.
“Those government employees’ quarters along Kanna Street (Strand Road) have been ordered to move out. As for as I’m concerned, the river side will become an industrial port town. We also heard Kanna Street will be upgraded into an eight-lane traffic so that it can accommodate container vehicles and bigger trucks”, said a government employee.
